Boyolali – Through community service in Sranten Village, UNDIP KKN Team II introduced automatic trash cans using ultrasonic sensors based on Arduino UNO at SDN 1 Sranten, Karanggede District, Boyolali Regency. Previously there were no subjects at elementary school level that led to the field of technology, and technology-related learning did not yet exist in elementary school.
This automatic rubbish bin innovation aims to attract elementary school students to throw rubbish in the right place. In this current era, technology is on the rise, almost all daily activities are assisted by machines or you could say almost all use technology. In this case, technology education is very important to learn even when children are still at elementary school level.
Undip students took the initiative to invite elementary school students to become more familiar with technology and also to be more enthusiastic about maintaining school cleanliness through the activity ‘Introducing Automatic Trash Cans using Arduino-based Ultrasonic sensors’.
The way this trash can works is that the trash can will open if there is an object or trash detected by the ultrasonic sensor at a distance of less than 10 cm. The trash can lid will open with the servo motor rotating 90o from its previous position. After that, the trash can lid will open for 3 seconds. And once opened, the trash can be put straight into the trash can. After the trash can lid is open for 3 seconds, the trash lid will close again.
The target chosen by Undip students for learning technology is only at the 6th grade elementary school level. Because students at this level are considered more competent and more enthusiastic in learning technology. Meanwhile, the implementation time was Wednesday 2 August 2023 and the results were in accordance with the plan determined by UNDIP students.
The hope of the 2022/2023 UNDIP Team II KKN after this activity is held is that learning related to technology will be more optimized at the elementary school level and given additional time so that students will become more familiar with insights in the field of Technology.
