The Badak LNG/LPG refinery in Bontang is a natural gas liquefaction plant that produces LNG and LPG. The LNG/LPG production results are exported to buyer countries, namely Japan, Korea and Taiwan as the main buyers and other side buyers to be used as fuel. In the LNG/LPG production process, various instruments are needed, both as measurement tools and control tools. This topic was raised at the second series of Automation Engineering Technology’s Visiting Lecturer webinar, which held online on September 19, 2022. The main speaker was Mr. Yohanes Sihombing from Badak LNG. Mr. Yohanes is also an alumnus of. Automation Engineering Technology in 2019, in the collaboration class between Vocational College Undip and PT. Badak LNG. The activity were attended by students, lecturers and TRO Undip staff, as well as guests from outside Undip.

The visiting lecturer event began with remarks from the chairman of the visiting lecturer committee, Ahmad Ridlo Hanifudin Tahier, M.Si. In his remarks, he hoped that this activity can provide an overview of the world of work from Alumni for students as well as the application of the knowledge learned during college and its application in the real world. The event was continued with the opening by the Head of the Automation Engineering Technology Study Program, Mr. Much. Azam, S.Si., M.Si., representing the Dean of the Undip Vocational College. In his remarks Mr. Much. Azam, mentioned the importance of the role of alumni to advance the Automation Engineering Technology program, alumni can contribute to share knowledge and work tips to their classmates who are still in college. With a strong alumni network, it will create synergy between study programs and alumni.
The Visiting Lecturer webinar was then continued with a discussion on instrumentation in LNG processing. The instrument has various functions, namely as an observation tool, a measurement tool and a control tool. The instrumentation is used on five trains at PT Badak LNG. Train is a natural gas processing unit from feed gas to LNG. PT Badak LNG has five main plants that perform natural gas liquefaction functions, namely Plants 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5:
Plant 1. CO2 Removal Unit
Plant 2. Dehydration & Mercury Removal Unit
Plant 3. Scrub Column & Fractionation Unit
Plant 4. Propane & MCR Refrigerant System
Plant 5. Liquefaction Unit
In addition, various measurement instrumentation tools in the LNG processing process were explained, namely orifice, venturi, rotameter, pitot tube and others. As well as a discussion of control valves and various control loops.
This Second Series of Visiting Lecturer event is a series of visiting lecturer events held by the Automation Engineering Technology Study Program. The next event will invite Dr. Yono Hadi Pramono, M.Eng. from the ITS, Surabaya with the topic of Utilization of Optoelectronic and Electromagnetic Technology in the Sensor Field.
